Cynicism

Context:

Cynicism is a short piece for Brass Quintet that reflects on feelings of paranoia, anger, distain and a general 'cynical' mindset when reflecting upon one's surroundings, almost to  humorous degree. the piece revolves around a few short and catchy melodies that suggestive of a Faux-1920s-Swing, especially the likes of the Brass Quintet versions of 'Putting On The Ritz'. This was recorded at a BNM concert with Epsilon Brass (Charlie Cooper on 1st Trumpet, Jack Phillips on 2nd, Chloe Chang on French Horn, Nathaniel Lawton on Trombone and Alex Hamilton on Tuba).

As with a few of the other pieces in this portfolio, I had to make the decision whether or not to write the score in swing time or to write the specific 'swung' rhythms out by hand. I felt that it still made more sense for me to write this in straight as not all of the parts made sense in swing time and it allowed me to be more specific with how I wanted it played. It actually also made the score easier to read for the quintet as they are a classically trained group and so do not encounter swing markers as often on their scores.

Although the performance wasn't as good as some of the rehearsals, I am still very happy to have got this piece performed and I believe the charm of the repetitive melodies shines through. I m hoping to get a better recording of this piece with a different brass quintet soon.
