Analogue

Context:

For this solo Piano work, I collaborated with 2nd year Pianist Sarah Potjewijd. This piece is about a faulty mechanical device that slowly begins to break down, gradually employing more and more rhythmic, harmonic and melodic surprises or 'glitches'. We recorded this piece in the studio with Engineer and Producer Callum Lawrence.

When presenting this piece to peers and tutors it was met with mixed reviews in regards to the length of the material and so I felt the best way to approach it was to see it objectively: the material described to me that it was faultering likeĀ  mechianical device and ended with a melodic crash. Therefor why drag the content out when the points I had set out to present had presented themselves? Thus I decided to keep the piece at a short and punctual 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

The percussive, rhythmic and minimalist riff that this piece revolves around is inspired by jazz band GoGo Penguin, especially their 2022 release, Wave Decay, which repeats the same keyboard riff throughout, with simples running melodies over the top.

Upon reflection, I am happy with this decision as I feel it makes the piece more memorable and overall I am happy with how the piece is presented. There are a few hiccups in the recording, however I feel that Sarah brought this piece to life, and as she only had a weekend to learn it, due to Piano technicals and competitions, I was impressed by her performance.

I hope to rerecord this piece with her or perhaps present in a performance format at some point in the future.
